Dense Fog Blamed for Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-49 North
A series of early morning crashes, likely triggered by extremely dense fog, shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 49 in the far south end of DeSoto Parish early this morning.
The incidents, first reported around 4:15 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 5, 2025, involved multiple vehicles, including an overturned 18-wheeler, and have resulted in at least one reported fatality.
Chain Reaction Shuts Down Northbound I-49 Traffic
DeSoto Dispatchers were inundated with calls beginning just after 4:00 a.m., with the initial report pinpointing a crash near the 162-mile marker on I-49 North. Authorities believe the zero-visibility conditions caused by heavy fog led to a devastating chain reaction. The overturned 18-wheeler appears to be a key element in the initial sequence of collisions.
As of 8:15 a.m., the northbound lanes of the interstate remain completely closed as first responders conduct cleanup, investigation, and traffic control. Southbound lanes were temporarily closed earlier but have since reopened to traffic.
One Confirmed Death, Diversions in Place
Tragically, one fatality has been confirmed as a result of the morning's chaos. Additionally, at least one other person has been transported to a local hospital, though the full extent of all injuries sustained in the numerous collisions is not yet known.
Motorists are being diverted off the interstate to alternate routes. Law enforcement and emergency personnel are urging drivers to exercise extreme patience and caution while navigating the area and to be highly mindful of first responders working on the roadway. Authorities aim to reopen the roadway as quickly as possible once the scene is cleared and deemed safe.
