SHREVEPORT, LA - Things got testy during the Bossier City Charter Study Commission meeting on Tuesday. The nastiness centers on the term limit debate that has been raging in Bossier City for a couple of years.

The City Council and the Mayor appointed members to the Charter Commission to take a look at the charter and make recommendations for changes. Last week, the panel voted 4-3 to add term limits to the city charter. This proposal would limit members of the council and the mayor to 3 consecutive terms. It would be retroactive to include current members.

The Charter says any items approved by the Charter Commission "shall" be sent to the voters of Bossier City for approval. Groups supporting term limits are confident voters in Bossier City will vote in support of term limits.

Some Members Want to Revote

Things got sideways this week when the Secretary of the Charter Commission Sandra Morehart sent out a proposed agenda which would revisit the term limit issue. But Chairman Preston Friedley did not want that item on the agenda. He does not believe it would be appropriate for a new voter on the matter. He says the panel is on a tight timeline and has several matters to handle.

It's really hard to describe how nasty things got during the Tuesday meeting.

Here's the video of the meeting if you can bear to watch this debacle.
