State Representative Barbara Norton has announced she's running for the State Senate. Norton will challenge Greg Tarver for his District 39 seat.

Norton is term limited on the House side and says she wants to continue to serve her constituents. KEEL News asked Norton what her greatest contribution was to our area and she talked at length about helping to provide health care for all.

She also did not take a position on what should be done about the extension of I-49 in the inner city. She says one problem with that is the lack of state funding to get this project built. She does say more discussion needs to take place.

KEEL News caught up with Senator Tarver about Norton's decision and he told us "Ms. Norton has her record and I have mine.  Mine is much more extensive than hers and we will let the voters decide."

Tarver says he will make an official announcement after the legislative session.

Tarver has served in the Senate from 1984 to 2004 and was elected back to the post in 2012.

The election is October 12th with the runoff set for November 16th. This will include elections for the legislature and the Governor.
