The annual Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry’s (LDAF) Shade Tree Sale will be held at various district forestry offices and other locations throughout the state the week of Feb. 27 through March 2, Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said.

Louisiana’s homeowners, urban foresters and gardeners look forward to the annual seedling sale, Strain said.

“The seedlings we grow at our state nurseries have superior genetics,” Strain said. “This is the only time of year that we pre-pack the seedlings into small packets, so they’re manageable for just about any home gardener.”

Both hardwood and pine seedling packets are available for sale.

Hardwood seedling packets contain six seedlings each and may be purchased for $5. Hardwood species available are baldcypress, red maple, blackgum, sawtooth oak and sycamore, but the available species may differ from location to location.  Pine seedling packets contain 20 loblolly seedlings and are $5 each.

All seedlings are bare-root and come with planting and care instructions. They will be available on a first-come basis and cannot be reserved in advance.

“We often sell out certain species quickly, especially some of the hardwoods, so we it’s best to shop early,” Strain said.
