2 Heat Related Deaths Reported in Shreveport Over Weekend
SHREVEPORT, LA – This is going to be a scorching week all across Louisiana. Heat advisories will likely be in place for much of the week. You can expect to see temperatures top the 100 degree mark a couple of times this week. The heat index will also be dangerously hot closing in on 110 degrees or higher.
So far this year, the Louisiana Department of Health reports there have been 11 heat related deaths across Louisiana. But these numbers are through the end of July and do not include this past weekend. In northwest Louisiana, there were 2 heat related deaths, but that number has now doubled after a tragic weekend.
2 Heat Deaths in Shreveport in August
Caddo Parish Coroner Dr. Todd Thoma tells KEEL News he can confirm 2 heat related deaths from this past weekend. One of the deaths happened in the Broadmoor neighborhood where the victim was found dead in a yard. The man had apparently become confused and passed out. Dr. Thoma tells us the other death was a homeless man who was found dead in a hot car. He says the windows were down, but it was still extremely hot in the car.

8 of the deaths have been men while 3 have been women.
All of the victims were over the age of 30, but nearly half of them were 65 or older.
Hospital Visits for Heat in Louisiana
Dozens of people have been treated for heat related illnesses in Louisiana. On June 8, there were 47 such visits. That number spiked to 56 on June 15. On June 25, 76 people showed up at Louisiana hospitals with heat related health problems. Things really escalated on July 2 when 101 people showed up to emergency rooms for heat related illnesses.
Emergency Room Visits By Region
In northwest Louisiana, there have been 368 visits to emergency rooms for heat related illnesses so far this year. Only southeast Louisiana and Acadiana reported more hospital visits for these symptoms.

Jefferson Parish had the highest number of hospital visits at 185. Caddo Parish had the 2nd highest number of visits.
