SHREVEPORT, LA

Just when you thought spring had already sprung in Shreveport, Mother Nature says "Not so fast."  The past few weeks in the Arklatex have seen record setting high temperatures. One day we almost reached ninety degrees... in February. But don't give up on the mosquito killing weather just yet.

A quick check on the Weather Channel website shows we're in store for temperatures to drop below freezing as soon as this weekend, with a low of 28 degrees by Sunday night.  In fact, for the next few weeks, expect highs in the 40's and 50's, and lows to dip down into the upper 20's.

I would've thought it would've been more, but on average, between the middle of November through about the middle of March, Shreveport has about 39 days of freezing or below freezing temperatures. And temperatures only drop below 15 degrees about once every two winters.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest day on record for Shreveport was all the way back on February 12th, 1899 when it dropped to a bone-chilling -5 degrees.

Should You Wrap Pipes and Prepare for Sub-freezing temps in Shreveport Again?

Even though I figured our freezing temperatures were behind us for the year, it looks like it wouldn't be a bad idea to rewrap any exposed pipes or outdoor water spigots again. Also wouldn't hurt to cover any tender outdoor plants and vegetation.

Helpful Tips to Prepare for Sub-freezing Temperatures

Other helpful tips to prepare for and deal with the colder temps would be to:

  • Caulk and/or weather-strip doors and windows
  • Be sure to leave faucets dripping at a trickle to keep pressure from building up in the pipes
  • Open cabinet doors to circulate warmer air around plumbing
  • Cover sensitive outdoor plants and vegetation with a sheet or plastic
  • Make sure pets are inside

Looks like I unwrapped my water hose spigot a little too early.... now where did I put that Freeze Mizer?
