Detached Flatbed Trailer Kills Bossier Parish Man on Lawnmower
On July 4, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G was notified of a vehicle crash involving a truck and a man operating a lawnmower at his residence. The crash occurred on Louisiana Highway 3 north of Kingston Road and ultimately claimed the life of 66-year-old Donald Ward.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Ward was at his residence and operating a zero-turn lawnmower in his yard. At the same time, a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 48-year-old Mark Foy of Benton, was pulling an empty flatbed trailer north on Louisiana Highway 3. While traveling north, the trailer detached from the vehicle, exited the roadway and collided with Ward. Troopers determined that the trailer was not properly secured to the Chevrolet.
Ward suffered severe injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Foy was properly restrained and was not injured.
Although impairment on the part of the Foy is not suspected, standard toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis.
On July 14, 2024, Troop G was notified that Ward had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
In prioritizing safety on the roadway, Louisiana state law (L.R.S. 32:383) requires the load on any vehicle to be securely fastened so as to prevent the covering or load from becoming loose, detached, or in any manner a hazard to other users of the highway.
In 2024, Troop G has investigated six fatal crashes, resulting in seven deaths.
