Shreveport Man Arrested for Sex Crimes Involving a 16-Year-Old

On Friday (2/21/25) Shreveport Police Department got a call about sexual assault involving a 16-year-old.

The victim was taken in to the Shreveport Investigative Unit for a forensic interview. The 16-year-old told SPD specific details about the assault and who the suspect was. Melvin Herrera was the person the victim identified as who assaulted her.

A warrant was put out for Herrera's arrest, and he was quickly picked-up by SPD Officers. Part of the assault was caught on camera. That, and the details in the interview were enough to immediately get a warrant.

SPD had this to say on the charges:

"As a result of the investigation, Melvin Herrera has been charged with 2nd Degree Rape. The Shreveport Police Department is continuing its investigation and is working closely with the District Attorney’s Office. If convicted he could face up to 40 years in prison."
