The number of fatal crashes in Louisiana is dropping, but the story is not the same for the Shreveport area. Caddo Parish leads all parishes in the state for fatal wrecks so far this year. According to the latest data from the Center for Analytics at LSU, there have been 20 fatal wrecks in Caddo Parish so far in 2025. There have been 18 fatal wrecks in Orleans Parish so far this year and 11 in East Baton Rouge Parish.

 

How Many Fatal Wrecks Have Happened in Louisiana?

Over the past 2 years, Caddo Parish has the 3rd highest number of fatal wrecks.
For all of 2024, there were 768 fatal wrecks in Louisiana. Of those wrecks, 466 of the victims were drivers and 95 passengers died. 158 pedestrians and 41 bicyclists died in these fatal crashes.

These numbers compare to 811 total fatalities in the state in 2023. 506 drivers died while 122 passengers were killed. There were also 145 pedestrian fatalities and 34 bicyclists died.

The biggest cause of these deadly wrecks is distracted driving. The experts say the cell phone is a major culprit. But drunk driving is also the cause of many fatal wrecks.

5. Sleepiness

You are reminding that buckling up can save lives. Shreveport is one of the leaders on this front. Data shows seat belt use in the Shreveport area is at 87.8%.  New Orleans and Monroe lead the state with 88.3% seat belt use.  Alexandria drivers only buckle up at a rate of 73.7%. the worst rate of all the metro areas.
