Bat Removal at Shreveport’s Fair Grounds Field is Underway
The decision was made by the city in early April of 2022 that Fair Grounds Field would be demolished.
Something was still standing in the way of the wrecking ball after the decision was made... You guessed it! The bats. We were told by representatives of the city, that before the bats could be removed, we had to wait for "bat mating season" to be over. Well, it seems that the honeymoon is over for the bats at Fair Grounds Field, as crews were seen removing them for relocation on Tuesday (8/23/22).
The workers could be seen in a lift safely removing the bats from under the bleachers where many locals use to enjoy Shreveport Captains games.
The stadium has been a home for these bats for a very long time. Even when the stadium was still in use, the bats loved hanging out (literally) under the bleachers and several other over-hangs around the now, decrepit structure.
One-time local TV star "Billy the Exterminator" even tried to help remove the bats to relocate them, but was unsuccessful. And once the field was no longer in use, the bats settled in.
After several people showed interest in possibly revitalizing the unused space, we were told that the EPA had protections on the bats and removing them would be more trouble than it was worth to get the field back up-and-running. That's when the field went in to total disrepair.
After years of Fair Grounds Field being the butt of many jokes about Shreveport the decision was made to totally demolish the stadium. After crews are finished removing the bats, and get the all-clear, they'll start sending in the wrecking crew to knock it down. After that, all we'll have is the memories of cheering the home-team while eating ice-cream out of a little batter's-helmet... And of course... The bats.
