Shreveport Police Investigating Deadly Crash Involving a Train
On Monday just after 2am, Shreveport Police received a call regarding a major crash involving a train and a car near East 85th Street and Fairfield Avenue.
When Police arrived and saw the severity of the accident, Shreveport Fire Department was called in to assist. SPD found that two of the car's occupants had been fatally injured during the crash and were pronounced dead on the scene.
The Shreveport Police Crash Investigations Unit was informed of the deadly accident and responded to the scene. After an investigation, detectives determined that the car was travelling on East 85th Street when, for reasons still under investigation, the car drove around the the lowered arm of the railroad crossing while the red warning lights were flashing.
The car continued across the tracks before being struck on the driver's side by an oncoming train. The impact caused the car to overturn casing the driver and passengers to be ejected. The driver and rear-passenger did not survive the crash.
From SPD:
"While conducting death notifications, investigators located a third occupant of the vehicle at a residence associated with the family. The individual, who stated he had been riding in the front passenger seat, confirmed that the driver disregarded the activated crossing arms before the train struck the vehicle. He was transported to Ochsner LSU Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
The circumstances of the crash, including final determinations on occupant seating positions, remain under active investigation by the Shreveport Police Crash Investigations Unit."
