The First Signs of Spring: What’s Blooming Now?
Usually we have to wait until mid to later March to see all of our favorite flowers, but several early birds should be blooming this month. One that we can look forward to are those Bartlett pear trees—known for their dense white clusters—showing off their petals in mid-February.
You will also probably see Japanese magnolias, redbuds and crabapple trees starting to bloom this month.
When to Expect Azaleas and Dogwoods to Peak
But my all time favorite in our area are the azaleas and dogwoods. While the early bloomers like flowering cherries and saucer magnolias are beginning to show up, the iconic azaleas will likely be a little bit later. typically follow closely behind.
In a standard year, North Louisiana azaleas begin their display in early-to-mid March, peaking toward the end of the month. However, with recent forecasts showing daytime highs climbing into the mid-70s and overnight lows staying well above freezing, we could see these flowers earlier than normal. Dogwoods typically flourish as we head deeper into the warmer spring months.

Could a Late Freeze Ruin the Blooms?
We have had a pretty good dose of winter and many are hoping the bitterly cold weather is done for the season, But we often have another blast of cold air before Easter. That could impact some of the spring blooms that are ready to greet us.
