My friend Ray Pliler Pearson who lives on Cross Lake in Shreveport alerted me to these disgusting 'trash islands' forming in the lake over the weekend due to low water levels. Did you know that Cross Lake is where Shreveport gets its water from? Yep! Cross Lake is Shreveport's primary source of water. After seeing the picture above, it really makes you feel safe, doesn't it?

Here's the water quality report for 2021 for Shreveport, LA.

Potential water safety issues aside, can you imagine purchasing a home on Caddo Lake to enjoy nature and the beautiful scenery only to have all of this disgusting trash for your view when water levels are down? This is wrong on so many levels.

While I realize this trash has been there for some time and that it's not a new issue, it's hard to see. In other areas of the country experiencing drought conditions, like Lake Mead outside of Las Vegas, dead bodies are being found.

While, thankfully, no remains have been found in Caddo Lake, you can clearly see tires, shopping carts, mattresses and box springs, trash cans, etc... This can't be good for the area wildlife. In fact, if you fish Cross Lake, you might want to avoid Cotton's Pocket, where these pictures were taken, all together.

What I would like to know is what our area leaders intend to do about this. Chances are, when we finally get some rain and the water levels rise, the issue will get shifted to the back burner. After all, out of sight, out of mind, right? Let's make sure that doesn't happen.
