A bizarre power outage this afternoon in west Shreveport affects thousands of SWEPCO customers.

Power company spokesman Scott McCloud said just before 2:15 p.m., a cross-arm broke on a 69,000-volt transmission tower just outside the SWEPCO substation on the north side of I-20, across from Splash Kingdom, knocking out power to more than 5,500 homes and businesses in the area.

He said the customers affected are served out of three company substations in the western portions of Shreveport.

One of the businesses affected by the outage was ours here at Townsquare Media on Westport Avenue, so you know we'll be keeping track of what's going on. So far, it's looking like it might take until 7 or 8 tonight for the power to be restored. McCloud said, however, that some switching may occur to move customer load to other circuits and get them back on sooner.
