SHREVEPORT, LA - Construction is moving along on the police substations in Shreveport. The Monkhouse Drive facility is expected to open first. It is about 99% complete and should be ready to go in just a few weeks. Area 3 patrol will move into that location. This will include police captains, assistant chiefs and officers.

Construction is also moving along on the North Market substation.

The Monkhouse Drive location includes a 13 acre tract of land. Chief Smith says much of that land is concrete paving and he's planning to develop that site for a Shreveport driving track. He will team with Sportran to get this facility ready for driver training for police officers, bus drivers and firefighters. He says this will relieve the demand for use at the Fairgrounds.

The 3rd substation is going to be built at the Cedar Grove Park at St. Vincent and 70th Street. Chief Wayne Smith says because this is a park, we can readjust what is already there and keep the baseball field, the basketball court and the playground area. The Chief says this is also room for a small football field at this site.

The Chief says "we interact with kids throughout the year and this will give us a place to hold special events. We met with PAL (Police Activity League) and they will be partnering with us." He says that group says once this substation is developed, this could be a national model for the entire country of what a city can do to get its police department more embedded in the community and being more responsive to area youth.

Chief Smith says there is also a bus hub at this park which will make it much easier for people to get to the park by using Sportran which is currently free.
