Ready to get confused? Because I'm confused.

According to KALB-TV in Alexandria, the 318 region of Louisiana is going to get an new area code. But they're not losing the 318 area code either. This new area code is going to "overlay" the 318, and require more area code usage.

Follow?

KALB's report says that AT&T has announced a change being made by the Louisiana Public Service Commission to add a 457 area code to North Louisiana. But again, this isn't replacing the 318 area code already used in the region. This area code will essentially be a new area code INSIDE the existing area code.

It works like this:

If you live in the 318, and you are calling from inside the 318, instead of using the normal 7-digit calling method (555-XXXX) you will now need to use the 10-digit method. Like if you were calling from outside the area code (318-555-XXXX), but while you're inside the area code, calling someone else inside the area code. So 318-to-318 calls.

But, according to the KALB report, after September 25th, 2025...new phone numbers won't have 318 attached. After that point, the new 457 area code will be assigned. So both codes will be active at the same time.

Even before those new 457 area code numbers start rolling out, you're going to need to get used to putting the 318 area code in when making a call. Because the new 10-digit calling will start in late February. However, if you forget the area code, your call will still be completed...until August 25th.

After August 25th, if you don't put the area code in, your call will not be completed.
