The State Senate approved legislation that could provide some of the toughest punishment in the United States for repeat heroin dealers. The measure's sponsor Senator Dan Claitor commented "I hope it discourages folks from engaging in the distribution of heroin, this is probably a good thing". For a repeat offender this could mean nearly 100 years in prison.

The bill gives judges discretion to sentence dealers, as well as those convicted of possession with intent to distribute heroin, to what is in effect  a life sentence. The Bill SB87 will now go to Governor Bobby Jindal. The use of heroin has been an ongoing problem in the state of Louisiana, and throughout the U.S. The drug has become more mainstream in society, and often more potent than in the past.
