Matthew McConaughey Shouts Out Shreveport Pro Wrestling Again

Alright, alright, alright...Matthew McConaughey has some fond memories of Shreveport, Louisiana. Specifically watching professional wrestling at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum.

McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas and ended up relocating to Longview, Texas in his youth. While in Longview, McConaughey would apparently make trips to Shreveport to watch professional wrestling at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum.

While the Hirsch currently plays host to Shreveport Mudbugs hockey, it has a long history of hosting major concerts, pageants, and sporting events. That included multiple major Mid-South Wrestling shows. Which appear to be the events that McConaughey is referencing.

In the 1980s, American professional wrestling was broken up into regions know in the business as "territories". Mid-South Wrestling was the territory that covered East Texas and Shreveport. In fact, for many year Mid-South Wrestling called Shreveport home. Filming their weekly television shows on the Louisiana State Fairgrounds, and filming their promotional materials at local TV stations. Many pro wrestling hall of fame members spent years in Shreveport during this time.

When McConaughey has talked about his time in Shreveport, he's referenced a few particular wrestlers that he enjoyed watching. Including WWE Hall of Fame member Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Recently, McConaughey was on WWE's "The Bump" to talk about his new book. While on the show, his history as a wrestling fan came up, before being surprised by one of his pro wrestling heroes.

Volume warning, McConaughey gets really loud when he gets surprised.

This isn't the first time McConaughey has name-dropped Shreveport and the Hirsch when talking about his pro wrestling fandom. A few years back he was sitting with WWE legend John Cena on a talk show when he brought up his time in Shreveport.

At some point, McConaughey is going to tell the full story of his time at the Hirsch watching wrestling matches. But for now we will have to just enjoy these random stories he keeps telling during interviews.
