A Mansfield family has created an endowed scholarship at Northwestern State University to benefit a student from DeSoto Parish. The Jerrie and Dennis Choate Endowed Scholarship is a two-year award that will benefit a student pursuing an education degree. Students from Mansfield High School will be given first preference, then selection will be open to students from DeSoto Parish. The scholarship will be awarded in spring and fall semesters to juniors or seniors -- who must maintain a 2.5 grade point average. The Choate family's association with Northwestern began with Dennis Choate's mother, Mary Stevenson Choate, who worked in Iberville cafeteria for nearly 20 years. Since then, over 15 family members have graduated from NSU. Dennis and Jerrie Choate both started teaching at MHS after graduating from NSU. Jerrie still teaches there; Dennis has been an environmental technician at International Paper in Mansfield for the past 27 years.
