In these United States of America, we sure do love our pooches. And the breed we love the most doesn't ever seem to change.

The American Kennel Club announced at a virtual press conference yesterday that the Labrador Retriever is the nation's favorite dog for the 30th consecutive year.

Are we that boring or Labs just that awesome? We'll digress.

“America’s love for Labs is undeniable,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo.

“They’re such versatile, family-friendly dogs that it’s no wonder they’ve been so popular for 30 years. The French Bulldog, however, seems poised to end the Lab’s reign. The playful, adaptable Frenchie has become increasingly popular over the past decade and shows no signs of slowing down. As always, we encourage people to do their research to make sure they are not just getting a purebred dog, but most importantly a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder.”

While the lovable Lab continues to hold down the top spot, the French Bulldog continues to make a big jump in popularity. Those sweet pups are now at number two in 2020, knocking the German Shepherd down to third.

The German Shepherd had been the second most popular breed since 2009.

Here are the top 10 most popular breeds:

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. French Bulldog
  3. German Shepherd
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Bulldog
  6. Poodle
  7. Beagle
  8. Rottweiler
  9. German Shorthaired Pointer
  10. Dachshund

There is one thing about this list that was not explained by the folks at the AKC -- how did they come up with it? We're not really sure if it was derived from the number of pups registered per breed or some arbitrary ranking.
