KTBS reports that the man convicted of killing a Shreveport couple in 2018 has been sentenced for his crimes.

Caddo Parish District Judge John Mosely has sentenced 37-year-old Dewayne Watkins to two Life Sentences, to run consecutively, for the two counts of First Degree Murder he was convicted of. Watkins was found guilty by a jury last month.

Watkins was found guilty of killing 43-year-old Kelly Jose and his wife, 32-year-old Heather Jose, in November of 2018. According to police, Watkins had approached the couple at Mall St. Vincent in Shreveport and asked to use a phone. The couple offered to give Watkins a ride, a kind gesture that ended up costing the couple their lives.

The Jose's were killed, and then Watkins set their bodies on fire. When the victims were discovered inside the burning car on Penick Street, their bodies had been burned beyond recognition.

Once police located Watkins, he engaged them in a standoff that lasted hours. He was eventually arrested, and awaited trial for years.

During the sentencing hearing, KTBS reports that family members of the victimes made statements about the murders. Stating that Watkins took advantage of the couple's kindness.
