Measles Outbreak in Continues To Grow Larger, Now The Largest Outbreak In Over 25 Years

The measles outbreak that began in Texas continues to grow and is now considered the largest outbreak in the United States since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000.

According to a report from the Texas Tribune, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believe that the measles cases in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma are all connected and thus considered a single outbreak.

Measles Cases Continue to Grow in Texas

According to the Texas Tribune and the CDC, Texas has seen the majority of measles cases at over 700 confirmed. As of earlier this week, 90 people in Texas had been hospitalized and two school-aged children have died.

Largest Outbreak in America in 25 Years

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that this outbreak is the largest since the year 2000 when the United States declared measles eliminated. The outbreak now surpasses the last outbreak in 2019 when New York City say 697 cases.

While most cases have been connected to unvaccinated children, some adults have also tested positive.

What Are Symptoms of Measles?

Symptoms appear 7 to 21 days after contact with the virus, and may include:

• High fever
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes
• 2-3 days after symptoms begin, tiny white spots (Koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth.
• 3-5 days after symptoms begin, a rash that appears flat and red may appear on the face and hairline. This rash tends to spread downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs and feet.

When Should Someone Take Emergency Care?

• High fever (over 103°F).
• Severe cough or difficulty breathing.
• Signs of severe complications like seizures, confusion, or extreme fatigue/weakness.
• Dehydration
