A major bologna bust went down this week on the border of Texas and Mexico.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, officers working the Presidio port of entry earlier this week were able to seize 748 pounds of Mexican bologna that a woman was attempting to sneak into Texas. The prohibited meat was found in suitcases inside a vehicle that arrived from Mexico. Officers also found more than 280 boxes of undeclared prescription medication during a search of the vehicle.

Why is Mexican Bologna Illegal In The United States?

The 43-year-old U.S. citizen had officially declared one cooked meal during an inspection. Border Patrol Agriculture specialist were called in to check the vehicle. During the second inspection, the border patrol removed the suitcases from the car and found them to be heavier than normal according to a press release from the Border Patrol. A total of 40 rolls of bologna was found in the suitcases which added up to over 700 pounds.

According to the U.S. Customs, Mexican Bologna is illegal in the United States because it's made from pork and could introduce a disease to the pork industry.

Pills Were Found Too

According to the Border Patrol, hundreds of boxes of prescription pills were also seized. Tramadol, along with other medications were taken from the vehicle.

Other medications removed from the vehicle included Fentermina, Alprazolam, Clonazapam, Diazapam, Farmapram, Ampigran, Sulfamethoxazole and more.

The driver was issued a $1,000 fine and the bologna? Well, it was destroyed. The medication was seized and Border Patrol also seized over $7,600 in "concealed currency".
