Louisiana Is One of the Least Political States
With it currently being an election year many people are burnt out on politics, and the people of Louisiana are no different.
Even though Louisiana has a relatively high voter turnout compared to other states, a study from WalletHub named it one of the least politically engaged among all 50 states.
WalletHub ranked all 50 states by analyzing statistics and data including the percentage of registered voters who actually voted in the 2020 and 2022 elections, the percentage of eligible voters who actually voted, the amount of political donations from demographics, civic education engagement, and other voting policies.
Ranked from worst to best in political engagement Louisiana ranked as the 10th least engaged state.
Neighboring states showed similar levels of political engagement, with Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma all sharing a spot on the top 10 list.
There are many reasons for states to lack political engagement, many voters may not even take part in elections like midterms. Arizona State University Professor of History Donal Critchlow points to another reason why many states lack engagement, "the most common explanation for why voters do not vote is 'don't care.'"
Despite Louisiana having a lesser performance with political engagement the state is notable for having a very fair and equal balance of representation for its minority groups.
Many people find themselves not invested more politically because "at the local level, many residents are issue-oriented," explains Dr. Timother Kneeland. For many people to find any sort of greater interest in local politics there needs to be some door to entry like a local community organization.
