From Beautiful Moths to Blister Beetles, Learn About Louisiana’s Bug Kingdom
Louisiana is home to a lot of interesting wild life. There are thousands and thousands of various bugs, reptiles, and mammals that call the Bayou State home - from the extremely common to the extremely rare.
In a way, we have a lot in common with Australia. As the old joke goes everything "down under is huge and can kill you". And it's sort of that way here too. From rattlesnakes to sharks. Alligators to Bears. It's just a vastly diverse collection of wildlife that ranges from mild to deadly.
Rare and Unusual Insects in Louisiana
But, maybe the most fascinating (at least to me), is the collection of insects in our state. North Louisiana is estimated to have over 8,000 species of insects. When you start adding in the rest of the state, it can add up pretty quickly. Most are common. Most are harmless. Some are beautiful. Others are down right dangerous.
Who knew a snail or caterpillar could be dangerous? I didn't, but they sure can be. Did you know Louisiana is home to a grasshopper who's nickname is the "Devil's Horse"? We literally have a wild collection of creepy, dangerous, and beautiful species.
And yes, 'bugs' can be pretty. Below is my list of 10 of the most interesting insects in Louisiana. It's not all of them, but a little sample of the melting pot of diversity that makes up Louisiana's wildlife.
