Slow Drivers Beware: Louisiana’s New Left Lane Law Takes Effect July 1st
Do you have road rage when it comes to slow drivers in Shreveport? It seems like it is a weekly occurrence to hear about a car wreck on I-220, I-20, or 49. Are slow drivers to blame for all the accidents you see in Shreveport?
According to McCoy and Sparks Attorneys at Law, "Studies show that drivers who travel 10 miles below the speed limit are six times more likely to cause accidents." Does this fact justify our hatred of slow drivers? They're putting us in danger, right? When drivers choose to drive 10 miles below the speed limit, it greatly increases the chances of congestion and sudden braking from other drivers, which leads to more collisions.
Louisiana's Left Lane Law: Drive Right or Face Hefty Fines
Ever wish that drivers slowing down traffic would get instant karma, maybe even a "slowing ticket"? You know, the opposite of a speeding ticket? Well, Louisiana drivers who've felt that frustration might be happy: State Senator Jay Luneau pushed for a law that many say is long overdue. What does Louisiana's SB 11 mean for us?
Starting July 1st, 2025, slow Louisiana drivers need to move out of the left lane or pay up. The First Offense is a fine of $150. The second offense within a 12-month period of the first is a fine of $250. The third Offense within 12 months of the first is a fine of $350 and/or imprisonment for up to 30 days.
Although this may not speed up the process to and from work on I-20 because of the ongoing construction, hopefully, this means more people drive the speed limit moving forward.
