In Shreveport, we don't just remember our heroes, we carry their mission forward. This year marks a profound milestone for our local law enforcement and the community at large as we gather for the 30th Annual Dean–Williams Memorial 5K.

For three decades, this event has served as a "full-circle" moment for North Louisiana. It isn't just a race,  it is a living tribute to two men who gave everything to protect this city.

The Heroes Behind the Names

To understand why we run, we have to remember the men behind the badges. Officer Ron Dean (#551) was fatally wounded on December 16, 1992, while serving a narcotics search warrant. Just months later, on March 3, 1993, Officer Dwayne Martin Williams (#904) was also fatally wounded in the line of duty under similar circumstances.

Their loss shook our community to its core, but their spirit never left us. Both Officers Dean and Williams were dedicated supporters of the Special Olympics during their careers.

By naming this run in their honor, Shreveport found a way to ensure their passion for service continued long after their final watch.

A Full-Circle Legacy

What makes the 30th anniversary so special is the way it brings the community together. Every year, you’ll see police officers from various agencies running alongside the very neighbors they protect. We aren't just running in memory of Ron and Dwayne, we are running in honor of every fallen officer who has made the ultimate sacrifice.

Most importantly, the event continues the work they started. All proceeds from the race benefit the Special Olympics of Louisiana. It is the ultimate tribute, turning a moment of local heartbreak into a lifetime of opportunity for Special Olympics athletes.
