After the Grambling State football season ended, the school announced they were firing Head Football Coach Hue Jackson. The school made the move following their 27-22 loss to Southern in the 2023 Bayou Classic. Jackson was 8-14 over his two seasons with Grambling.

Jackson came to Grambling with NFL Head Coaching experience on his resume, but sparked massive outrage almost right away when he announced his plans to bring disgraced former Baylor Head Coach Art Briles into the program as Offensive Coordinator. The plan lasted less than a week after the outrage, and Jackson never seemed to recover after that.

So now the Grambling program is looking to start a new era with the hiring of former Nebraska coach Mickey Joseph.

Joseph, a Louisiana native, most recently served as the interim Head Coach for Nebraska, where he was also the Wide Receivers Coach. But prior to that, he made multiple coaching stops in his home state.

Back in 1998, he became the Quarterbacks Coach at his former high school, Archbishop Shaw, before taking a Grad Assistant position with Tulane. By the 2001 season, he had earned the Quarterback Coach position with Nicholls State, where he spent multiple seasons. He would again return to the high school ranks in New Orleans, when he became the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for the Desire Street Academy in 2005. He would be with the school until 2008.

His first Grambling position actually came in 2014, when he became the program's Wide Receivers Coach. Joseph was there until he moved down I-20 to Louisiana Tech in 2016 to take their Running Back Coach position. The following season, he took his talents south, as he became the Wide Receivers Coach at LSU. While in Baton Rouge, he added Associate Head Coach to his title, and stayed with the program until 2021. Then he went on to Nebraska, the same school he played college football for.

Now Joseph is back in Louisiana, and looking to lead the Tigers to their first Conference Championship since 2017.
