ANGOLA, La. – Louisiana is set to get back to executing murderers in the state. A DeSoto Parish case was to be the first execution in more than a dozen years. Christopher Sepulvado was set to be executed this week for the brutal killing of his young stepson. But Sepulvado died before his execution could be carried out.

Now the state is set to execute Jessie Hoffman for the 1996 rape and murder of Molly Elliot in St. Tammany Parish. Louisiana leaders have now decided to use nitrogen hypoxia for executions. This same method has recently been used in Alabama.

Louisiana has been faced with dozens of legal challenges over the lethal injection drugs. While this legal process has been happening, executions were halted.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says the state is now going to move forward with executions. Murrill is planning to witness the Hoffman execution.

The last time Louisiana carried out an execution was in 2010, when Gerald Bordelon was executed via lethal injection.

What Parishes Have the Most Inmates on Death Row?

Caddo Parish leads the state with the most inmates on death row. The Shreveport area has 13 awaiting execution.

East Baton Rouge Parish is next on the list with 12.

Orleans Parish has 3 killers on death row including Antoinette Franks, the only female awaiting execution. She was a New Orleans police officer who was involved in the murder of two members of a Vietnamese-American family who ran a restaurant and her fellow NOPD officer Ronald A. Williams II.
