USDA says the new symbol is called “My Plate” and well, it is a plate.  The Ag Department says that they want Americans to get great nutrition, but they want an easier way for folks to understand what the government thinks is the healthiest things to eat.

The food pyramid has been used since 1992, but now the plate is divided into four sections that have protein, veggies, fruits and grains, and the dairy is placed on the side of hte plate. USDA officials say “the pyramid was tired out, overly complex and tried to communicate too many nutrition facts at once.”

The plate, unveiled this week with first lady Michelle Obama in attendance gives diners an idea of what should be on their plates when they sit down at the dinner table.
