Runners from law enforcement agencies in Bossier and Caddo Parishes joined together Friday morning to kick off the 2016 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Louisiana.

Bossier runners started at the Bossier Civic Center, headed west on POW-MIA Boulevard, north on Benton Road and west on East Texas Street to cross the Texas Street Bridge into downtown Shreveport. They met up with their Caddo counterparts, who ran from Caddo Correctional Center, at the Caddo Parish Courthouse in downtown Shreveport.

The ceremony featured a joint proclamation from Bossier City Mayor Lo Walker and Shreveport Mayor Ollie Tyler. Then, Special Olympics athletes led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the motto of the Special Olympics: Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

After the ceremony, the runners continued with the torch east on Texas Avenue, south on South Market Street and down Youree Drive to the Relay Station. That's where they'll pick back up Tuesday, May 17, at 8 a.m. The torch will make its way from there to Hammond, where the Special Olympics Louisiana Summer Games will be held May 20-23.
