The 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale Air Force is the largest bomb wing in the Air Force Global Strike Command and is also the oldest bomb wing in the Air Force. On July 28th 2025, The US Air Force welcomed a new commander to the 2nd Bomb Wing during a ceremony hosted at Barksdale.

Who Is the New Commander of the 2nd Bomb Wing?

Colonel Christopher Cain officially took over as the commander of the 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base on July 28th.

Cain is no stranger to Barksdale Air Force. According to his bio on the Barksdale page, he has served in numerous roles at Barksdale since 2001, most recently serving as the Deputy Inspector General of the Air Force Global Strike Command.

During his illustrious career, his impressive resume includes stints at the Pentagon, serving as Commander of the 96th Bomb Squadron at Barksdale and being Commander of 5th Operations Group in Minot, North Dakota.

Colonel Cain: Master Navigator With a Long List of Awards & Decorations

Not that Colonel Cain's work resume isn't impressive enough, but when you dive into his accomplishments, it's not hard to guess how he got became Commander of the largest bomb wing in the Air Force.

Cain is a 'Master Navigator' with more than 2,800 flight hours - which includes more than 300 combat hours. And, his list of major awards and decorations is incredible.

He's received a Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, National Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal with a bronze star, and a Combat Readiness Medal with one oak leaf cluster. And that's only a small smattering of his awards and honors.
