What's the language that the most Americans speak after English? You'd probably say Spanish and you'd be absolutely right. But if you look at the most common languages after that, the results get a little more surprising, especially when you look at them state by state.

Spanish covers the US except for two heavily French areas: a number of states near the Canadian border and our very own Louisiana. Yupik, a Native American tongue, is the second-most common in Alaska, and Tagalog is widely spoken in Hawaii thanks to the large Filipino population. The only other is German, which is common across North Dakota.

So, after Spanish, which language are you most likely to hear from our neighboring states? Well, in Texas that would be Vietnamese and, perhaps surprisingly, the same goes for Oklahoma. In Arkansas the third most common language is German, while, to the east, after English and Spanish, you'll hear French.
