Today is April 22, meaning it is Earth Day!  So, what is Earth Day?

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 as a way to bring more attention to environmental issues across the planet.  The original idea of creating the holiday dates back to the 1960s.

Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin was the primary proponent and force behind the creation of the holiday and through other environmental efforts across the country.

In the 1970s, environmental policies were the top political priority to 25% of Americans polled, according to History.

In 1990, over 200 million people in 140 nations celebrated Earth Day.

Today, 174 countries have Earth Day activities.
