Shreveport resident Orin Walker has lost his appeal to have a chicken coup in his yard. The property is at 7220 Legion Circle off of Jewella. After buying the baby chickens and setting up a chicken coup in the yard, Walker and his fiance were contacted by a representative of the Metropolitan Planning Commission He was informed that the chicken coup was not legal. That's when he began the process to get the zoning variance to raise the chickens.

Claudia Scott Larkin told the Council she does not want to "hear or see a chicken shack when she wakes up in the morning." Larkin says she has lived in the neighborhood for more than 30 years. She says this is a neighborhood in the city and "we don;t need chickens in our community." Larkin says the chickens are noisy and they attrack snakes and dogs and cats. Larkin and other residents asked members of the council to turn down the zoning appeal.

This is a growing trend in some other cities and Mother Earth Living says "from Seattle to St. Louis, hens are the latest trend in natural gardening." But the council did not approve the zoning request.
