The Watoto Children's Choir from Africa has been traveling all over the country, with two stops in Shreveport this coming Sunday.

Choir Director Daniel Ogwal told me these children, ranging in age from six to 13, are all from Uganda and are a part of Watoto Child Care Ministry.

"We rescue vulnerable children from the community, and all the children with trouble have either lost one or both of their parents to HIV, war, disease," Ogwal said. "So Watoto Child Care Ministry, together with the help of local community leaders, managed to identify them from the community, and we were able to rescue them and we now take care of them."

Ogwal said the ministry takes care of the children's physical, educational and emotional needs. And they also get to do some extensive traveling to perform with the choir.

"It is a great experience because in the travel, we get to have a lot of exposure coming with it to get to meet a lot of different people every day, great people, to get to see a lot of things that we need to happen back home in Africa," said Ogwal. "This exposure helps the children to have the right picture to draw from in the future."

Through this worship experience, the kids share their journeys to redemption and demonstrate that God desires to be a loving father to all mankind.

"After losing my parents, I felt alone, with no one to love me," said 6-year-old Jackie Nakku in a news release. "Now I know that God is my father. He loves and cares for me. As I travel on the choir, I am going to show people that God loves them, too."

The choir is featuring the brand-new production "Oh What Love," and performances are free and open to the public. Two shows are scheduled for Shreveport Sunday, March 8. One is from 9:30-11 a.m. at Shreveport Community Church on Buncombe Road. The other is at 6 p.m. at Summer Grove Baptist Church on Jewella.
