Shreveport residents will see a 14% increase on sewer rates this month and water rates will go up next month.

This is phase two of the plan passed a couple of years ago to meet federal mandates. The city is under a consent decree with the federal government to make major infrastructure improvements. Water and sewer director Barbara Featherston says the EPA has been working with the city to get the process started. She says "we will go out and evaluate our entire sewer system in five different phases, from the worst to the not as bad."

Featherston gave the Shreveport Council a full report on the improvement plan.

Rates will continue to go up over the next ten years to pay for more than $100 million in upgrades. Featherston says there is some good news for some residents. A new consumption-based rate structure will go into effect for water use. She says this could offset the higher sewer rates for customers who work to conserve water.

You will get a notification about sewer rates in your January bill and details on water rates will follow in your February bill.
