U-S Senator David Vitter is asking the Government Accountability Office to conduct a comprehensive audit of the U-S Army Corps of Engineers funding and contracting practices since 2004. In his letter to G-A-O Comptroller-General Gene Dodaro, Vitter says, "There has been far too much inefficiency at the Corps of Engineers." He says the Corps needs to show Congress where the billions of taxpayer dollars it's received are being used. He says backlogs and red tape have plagued the Corps -- especially since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. And he says he wants to start implementing reforms that will cut costs and speed up critical flood control projects.
