Louisiana Tech male students couldn't do it over a span of 40 years but the wrecking ball can.

Caruthers Hall and Neilson Hall on the Louisiana Tech campus in Ruston are being demolished.

The eight-story Caruthers opened in 1966 and the eleven-story Neilson followed in 1968.  Together, their construction cost was about $4.5-million. However, both dorms have outlived their usefulness and have been out of commission for the past few years. They've been replaced by nearby apartment-style dorms bearing the same honorary names.

The contractor hired to do the demolition work says both buildings should be down by Christmas and all of the debris removal and site cleanup should be finished by mid-January.  What happens then is up to Tech officials and they say no firm decision has been made on what to do with that site.   It could be turned into green space, recreation fields, parking, or modern dorms.  Those and other options are being explored.
