[UPDATE]  Trooper Steven Vincent has died from his wounds.

A Louisiana State Police trooper is fighting for his life after being shot in the head Sunday during a traffic stop near Bell City in Southwest Louisiana.

Residents held an impromptu candlelight vigil for Trooper Vincent Sunday night.

“This is not something he should be doing,” LSP Col. Michael D. Edmonson tells the American Press in Lake Charles.

Trooper Steven Vincent, 43, was headed to calls about a drunk driver and when he arrived at the scene Vincent spotted the reported vehicle in a ditch.

The suspect, Kevin Daigle, 54, of Lake Charles opened fire on Vincent with a sawed-off shot gun.

“I’m watching the tape and I’m listening to my trooper who’s sitting there talking to the guy, telling him, ‘Won’t you get out, let me help you. Come on out, I’ll help you. We’ll call a wrecker company and I’ll give you a ride,” Edmonson said.

“I watched that tape a few minutes later and I watched that truck door come open and I saw the shotgun blast. That shotgun wasn’t to do anything else but hurt somebody, kill somebody.”

Vincent did manage to get back to his patrol car and radio for help.

Edmonson adds that Daigle can be seen on the tape, walking over to Vincent and asking him if he’s alive.

“He told him, ‘Boy, you’re lucky. You’re lucky, but you’re gonna die soon,” Edmonson said.

Vincent is a decorated trooper.  Five years ago, he was given an award to help reduce drug trafficking in Jennings.

Friends say Vincent is an active runner and had completed a marathon Saturday night.

Vincent is a member of a large police family. He and his brother, Keith, chief of police in Iowa, La., have also competed in the Wounded Warrior half-marathon and 10K in Dallas along with their father, a former police officer, and their brother Terrell, a state trooper himself. The four Vincents are all Army veterans.
