Today is the first Friday in June, which means it is National Doughnut Day!

While it is fantastic to revel in the glory of golden, deep-fried doughnuts, its beginning wasn't meant to honor the ring of flour and sugar.

National Doughnut Day began in 1938 by the Salvation Army in Chicago to honor the female volunteers who helped feed soldiers on the front lines in World War I.

Doughnut chains have some specials for this special day:

Krispy Kreme will offer a free doughnut to customers.  Dunkin' Donuts will begin selling their Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich today (the new Bossier City location will be opening June 18th).

What is your favorite doughnut?
