1902 — James J. Jeffries knocked out Bob Fitzsimmons in the eighth round of their fight in San Francisco to retain the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1941 — Lefty Grove of the Boston Red Sox won his 300th game, 10-6, against the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park in Boston. (More info.)

1970 — The U.S. Tennis Association began using a nine-point tiebreaker — at 4-4 the next point wins the set. It later switched to the 12-point tiebreaker in 1974. (More info.)

1972 — The National League beat the American League, 4-3, in the MLB All-Star Game at Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta. (More info.)

1976 — American Jim Montgomery won the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the Montreal Olympics in a record time of 49.99 seconds, becoming the first swimmer to break the 50-second barrier. (More info.)

1976 — American Edwin Moses won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the Montreal Olympics in a world record time of 47.64 seconds. (More info.)
