U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley and Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator have joined together to offer a new tool to law enforcement to teach firearms safety to children.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick says it's a firearm safety trailer, which has been quite successful in the Baton Rouge area, and is now headed to ours.

"You can never get enough of this kind of education or training," Chadwick said. "There are things that the Sheriff's Office already is doing and providing in the form of firearms education for children and adults, as well. So this will just be one more tool for us to be able to use to bring those points home about safety, about proper storage of a handgun, what children should do if they find a handgun, and the lasting effects should that handgun fall into a small set of hands, or the wrong hands."

Chadwick says the mobile trailer can be brought to different festivals or schools, and trained officers and deputies will present the safety program to kids and their parents. The trailer will be housed at the CSO, and other law enforcement agencies can check it out, as needed.

"I've seen many cases in my 41-year law enforcement career that prove children need gun safety education," Sheriff Prator said. "The Caddo Sheriff's Office is excited to play such an important role in this program and to offer it, along with other ongoing programs like Sheriff's Safety Town, to help keep our children safe."

Sheriff's Safety Town is where our law enforcement agencies will be tomorrow, going through the training necessary to provide this program to our kids.
