Today Parents Can Apply For Education Vouchers

Starting today parents can begin applying for the statewide voucher program. It's expected many private, parochial and Christian schools will participate.

These schools are participating:

Evangel Christian Academy will accept 80 students in the fall.
20 in Kindergarten; 5 in 1st-4th grades; 10 in 7th, 8th, & 9th grades; and 5 in 10th & 11th grades

University Christian Preparatory
Saint Joseph Catholic School will accept 4 students in 1st & 2nd grades

Applications are available today online and at participating schools. The deadline to apply is June 29th. The Louisiana Department of Education will identify scholarship recipients no later than July 31st.

To be eligible, a child must have been enrolled in a C, D or F school during the 2011-2012 school year. Students must also be a resident of Louisiana and meet income requirements.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's effort to grant students in troubled public schools private school vouchers moved closer to reaching the goal with approval by a Senate Committee.

After several hours of debate, the Education Committee voted 5-1 to send SB597 to the full Senate for consideration. Supporters say it would help children trapped in failing schools. Opponents say it is aimed at destroying public education.
