United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., released the following statement regarding today’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Interior and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) that the federal government in December will hold the first oil and natural gas lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill.

April 20, 2010 marks the day of the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The first group to successfully gain injunctions against BP demanding relief for impacted fishermen was organized by Louisiana Attorney Stuart Smith.

On May 1st, this same group of attorneys, fishermen and environmentalists warned that the potential to human health was significant.
