The legalization of medical marijuana will, once again, be up for discussion during the Louisiana legislature's spring session.

Rep. Dalton Honore of Baton Rouge Baton Rouge, will file a bill that would allow for marijuana to be dispensed and distributed for medical purposes. Honore, a Democrat, says that polls show that 80 percent of Louisianans favor the idea.

Lawmakers legalized marijuana for medical purposes in 1991, but  the current law does not allow for the legal dispensing of the drug. Doctors can legally prescribe it, patients can legally use it, but there is no legal way to acquire it. That is what Honore's bill would address.

Last year, Honore and Sen. Fred Mills, a Republican from New Iberia, introduced similar legislation, but the bill was killed in committee. The Louisiana Sheriffs Association and Attorney General Buddy Caldwell led the opposition.
