The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has opened the Morganza Spillway and many residents and farmland is in the path of the rising water. Water has reached Melville near the Atchafalaya River and is now moving through Krotz Springs and across Hwy. 190. Later today, the water will reach areas near I-10 on the west side of Baton Rouge, covering a path roughly five miles wide. At the 72 hour mark, the water will be closing in on Morgan City, covering an area from Patterson to Schriever. Eight days after the floodway is opened, the water will reach areas near Cutoff, Larose, Chauvin and Dulac. Many residents have already evacuated and others will be leaving over the next two days.
