The amazing season of Shreveport native and LSU sophomore Sam Burns continued Thursday when the nation's top college golfer was named as this year's James J. Corbett Award winner as the top male amateur in the state of Louisiana. The prize is given annually by the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee and the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Burns' selection came the same week in which he earned his first top 10 finish in a professional event. Playing as an amateur, the Calvary grad fired three straight rounds of 66 to tie for sixth at the PGA Barbasol Shootout.

Burns has put together the best season by any player in the history of the LSU men's golf, including first team All-American and SEC Player of the Year..

Next on the schedule for Burns includes an appearance at the men's US Amateur Championship in mid-August, then as part of the the American team in the international Walker Cup competition in September. Earlier this year, the 21-year-old announced plans to turn pro following the Walker Cup.
