The Shreveport Police Department is mourning the death of Jefferson Coles Thomas.  The department's oldest retired officer died Wednesday at age 91.  Thomas was the last officer hired by the department before World War II began.  He worked as a police officer from August of 1941 until December of 1942, when he joined the United States Army Air Forces.  When he was honorable discharged in December of 1945, Thomas retured to the police department where he served until he retired in 1961 with the rank of Assistant Chief.  His family will receive visitors from ten until noon tomorrow at Rose-Neath Southside.  Graveside services will be held at one tomorrow afternoon at Forest Park East.
