An investigation into a complaint received from the Shreveport City Attorney's office leads to the arrest of a Shreveport firefighter on insurance fraud charges.

State Police say 36-year-old Michael Keel of Keithville was employed as a firefighter at the time of the alleged fraud.

The investigation began in July of 2013, when investigators received information that Keel fraudulently registered his ex-wife and former step-children for medical benefits from the City of Shreveport to which they were not entitled. From November 2010 through May 2013, the city's contributions for insurance premiums for family/dependent coverage and medical/dental claims, not including Keel, totaled over $85,000.

State police believe Keel intentionally defrauded the medical benefits program and the City of Shreveport bore no legal responsibility to the fraudulently-acquired claims.

Keel surrendered himself to LSP Insurance Fraud Troopers at Caddo Correctional Center and was booked without incident.

State police remind you the public plays an integral role in identifying suspects accused of these crimes, and you're strongly urged to report criminal or suspicious activity.
